Pick Pita

I'm totally addicted to Stacy's Pita Chips. I'm not that into pita generally, but these chips are so crunchy and flavorful, i really eat the whole bag in one sitting! The Texarkana Hot are actually very hot; after eating a handful you realize some guacamole would be nice to cool your mouth down. The Parmesan Garlic & Herb is very tasty, as is the Pesto & Sundried Tomato flavor. I even really like the Simply Naked chips, which are flavored with just sea salt. The only one i haven't tried is the Cinnamon Sugar - apparently they're excellent for dipping/scooping fruit and chocolate. Mmm, crunchy.

If you too mourned the closing of both Veg City Diners, shed no more tears - the owners opened Curly's Vegetarian Lunch this past May. I haven't been yet, but if it's anything like Veg City Diner, it will serve tons of fake meat, sandwiches, cakes and desserts. I used to love their vegan old skool milkshakes. They were so good you couldn't tell it was soy milk and vegan ice cream!

I know i haven't mentioned the box in months. Maybe i'm trying to hide the fact we've been failing miserably at our produce reduction. Tonight be threw out the fuzz-covered green beans and the green cauliflower. The cantaloupe on the counter, as the peaches, plums and one grapefruit, is now a mold factory. This humidity is insane, but i swear we have a grosser-than-typical kitchen. Things rot here like they're being paid to. Hard fruit morphs overnight into mushy blobs with mold spots. Our fridge drips water inside and no matter what we do, everything ends up sopping wet and spoiled. If you have a mold-free place, know that i envy you!

I'm in a similar situation with produce. I don't subscribe to the box, per se, but my friend and I bought a share of organic produce from a farm via a CSA (community supported agriculture). The farm is located way upstate NY -- there's actually a trip in the works for "shareholders" to visit during a weekend in late August. Anyway, every Thursday, my friend and I go to the Stanton St. Settlement to pick up our week's produce, and so much of it is so fresh. We get fruit (some fruit isn't organic), veggies, and eggs. We are both busybodies, and we hardly have time to cook it all. My friend throws everything he can into a salad -- raw kale salad, anyone? I've sadly had to discard things that I wished I had more time for. Oh, and I'm convinced that my fridge is a mold machine.

I'm going to have a post-birthday dinner tonight, and my friend is treating. Where should we go? Neither of us are vegetarian, but we kinda lean a little in that direction. Nothing super-pricey, and he's not as food adventurous as I am. Teany floats his boat to a tee. I'm okay about Teany. He also likes some of the food at the little XO Chinese restaurant around Hester and Elizabeth. I wouldn't mind going to another borough (I live in Queens!), but nothing too far from Manhattan because that's where he lives. Hmmm. I like Korean food. I think both of us might be willing to delve into Southern food. Reading your previous post about Southern food made me go mmmm.

Joey also blogged about two CSAs in Queens and i'm very interested in joining one of them!

I'm sorry i didn't write in time for your post-birthday dinner! Happy birthday! I guess for future notes in terms of Korean, i vote for Han Bat in Midtown Manhattan. It's not fancy but their gobdol bibimbop is the best - better than the "nicer" places on 32nd St! If you like Italian our whole group enjoyed Otto in the West Village. Their pasta is really good and we loved the olive oil gelato. I haven't been but my friend P whose taste i trust keeps raving about Nyonya in Chinatown, a Malaysian place. But in terms of vegetarian places i'd highly recommend Madras or Vatan for Indian, Village Mingala for Burmese (not all veg but they have a lot of options and even fake meat), Pukk for Thai and of course VDSH and Buddha Bodai.
