A Little Help

Does anyone have any food suggestions for San Francisco and Los Angeles (and everything inbetween on Rt. 1)? Restaurants, shops, markets, produce stands - anything goes as long as it's good! Cheap eats are great but we also love to splurge if it's worth it. Thanks!

Hide Sushi on Sawtelle is fab:

(and across the street from Giant Robot's store)

There's a fish shack on Rt 1, just north of Malibu that's perfect with the view and prices (on side of hill overlooking Rt 1 and ocean).

Get a drink at Shutters on Santa Monica beach:

Gardens of Taxco - Mexican food like they don't anywhere else in the U.S. -- don't look for burritos or chile.

El Coyote
- Great for b-list movie stars, strong margaritas, and chile con carne:

Go to Greens, at Fort Mason, south of the Embarcadero area. Greens has both eat-in (a bit pricey, but it's because the food is good) and take-out. I often get their take out, then walk to the end of the pier and eat while enjoying the view of the Bay.

I can't emphasize eating at Greens enough. Fanstastic vegetarian food, and just fantastic food, period. Brunch is especially affordable, with awesome views of the Golden Gate Bridge in the distance. I also love eating at Ti Couz, which serves breton crepes and such, right off the 16th Street BART station, near Valencia.

If you can swing a trip to the East Bay, check out the Scharffenberger chocolate shop/factory on 7th and Ashby. You can take a tour! Also Chez Panisse, if you have the budget. Upstairs at the cafe is more flexible than downstairs, and the food is just as good. Across the street is the Cheese Board, just amazing source for great cheese and bread. You can catch their pizza sold at Cheese Board Pizza down the street a few doors. Might as well check out the original Peets on Walnut and Vine and the Juice Bar Collective, kind of a hippy joint that serves terrific fresh juices. Next to Chez Panisse is Cesar, which serves amazing tapas and has an extensive drink menu.

Back in SF, you also might - if you are there on a Saturday - check out the SF Farmer's Market at the Ferry building. It has received world-wide accolades for its great bounty of local, organic products. Fantastic!

Yes, Greens has such beautiful views, too.

I would also say...

Chez Panisse in Berkeley and Millenium (in the Savoy Hotel/San Francisco). I haven't been to the latter, but have heard only good things.

Enjoy your trip!

p.s. ob sent me over here!

Half Moon Bay: south of San Francisco, fabulous burritos at Tres Amigos. FABULOUS.

Santa Cruz
1) At the intersection of Highway One and Highway 9, turn right onto River Street (Highway 9 goes left). Go down one block, pass Curves, and see River Cafe and Cheese Shop in front of the Farmers Exchange (furniture store). Try the Niman Ranch steak sandwich with cognac/gorgonzola sauce and caramelized onions. Try not to weep in gratitude: this might be one of the best sandwiches you will ever have. Ask to taste cheeses: Monte Enebro, Benedictine, La Tur, Truf (a truffled goat cheese from Italy).
2) Wonderful bistros in Santa Cruz, all of which feature the truly glorious farm produce from some of the farms who furnish Chez Panisse and all the best restaurants in San Francisco and beyond with their fruits, vegetables, etcetera, include:
Gabriella Cafe
Oswald (no website)
Ristorante Avanti (ditto)
Soif Wine Bar
Theo's ...and I recommend Theo's, in my little town of Soquel, because Chef Nicci Tripp makes food as good as any I've ever eaten in my life—as good as either of the four-star restaurants in the San Francisco Chronicle where I've eaten—and he makes his own cheeses with raw, organic milk from Claravale Dairy. (Read "Say Cheese and this piece on my blog (with food porn).

There are lots more restaurants listed here.

Feel free to e-mail me if you need more. tana at tanabutler dot com

I can give more recs in Cambria and parts south, and also for places to stay, if you need those.

Cheers!

WOW thank you so much for all the tips and suggestions everyone! We're going to try to hit up as much as humanly possible in 7 days. I'm afraid that each single day of our trip will get its own long post! I can't wait!
